A major industrial fire is underway along U.S. 90 near the Grand Parkway in Dayton.

The fire is burning at a new recycling center located off Rolke Road. Thick smoke could be seen rising from the facility as firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the scene.

According to A.J. Johnson, director of the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management, residents who live in the Dayton area north of U.S. 90 and east of SH 99, within an approximately five-mile radius of the plant, are advised to shelter in place. It is also advised to bring any outdoor pets inside if possible in the shelter-in-place area.

It is believed that a lithium battery amongst the rubble might have sparked the blaze, which has grown to now be a metal fire that is likely to burn for hours.

Fire crews remain actively working to contain the blaze as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. Updates will be posted as soon as more information becomes available.
