Man arrested after swimming across San Jacinto River to evade officers

A Cleveland man was arrested Saturday after allegedly swimming across the San Jacinto River in an attempt to evade police.

According to the Cleveland Police Department, Weston Riley Roddey, 27, repeatedly called the department’s 911 emergency line on March 7 while yelling profanity and hanging up.

Dispatchers reported that Roddey made several calls before a citizen witnessed him using a phone at a local business to dial 911.

Officers later located Roddey near Texas Highway 105 West. Police said Roddey began taunting officers from a distance, shouting that they could not catch him.

When officers approached, Roddey jumped into the San Jacinto River and swam across.

A short time later, Roddey was spotted inside a nearby restaurant, where officers detained him.

Roddey was taken into custody and transported to the Cleveland Police Department Jail, where he was booked on the following charges:

  • Silent abusive call or electronic communications to a 911 service, a Class B misdemeanor. Bond was set at $5,000.
  • Evading arrest or detention with previous convictions, a state jail felony. Bond was set at $10,000.

Roddey was later transported to the Liberty County Jail on the charges.
