Liberty County ESD No. 2 expands staffed service hours

The Liberty County Emergency Services District No. 2 Board has approved an expansion of the hours that paid firefighters are on duty as part of a long-term plan to increase staffing as funding allows. The district’s goal is to eventually provide paid firefighter coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Board members said they take their responsibility to taxpayers seriously and work to use tax dollars wisely for the benefit of the district and its residents. Fire departments require costly equipment and facilities to house that equipment, but officials say those investments are necessary so firefighters—both paid and volunteer—can perform their duties safely and effectively.

After those essential expenses are covered, the remaining funds determine how much paid staffing the district can support.

Following a review of the district’s finances, the board determined it could expand paid staffing. ESD No. 2 will now have two firefighters on duty working 10-hour shifts, six days a week.

Officials said the additional coverage improves protection for the community and provides some relief for volunteer firefighters, who continue to provide round-the-clock fire and rescue service.

ESD No. 2 officials emphasized that volunteer firefighters remain a vital part of the department and the service it provides to the community.

When firefighters are on duty, their responsibilities include maintaining equipment, ensuring the station is ready for emergencies and participating in regular training to keep their skills sharp.

The firefighters and volunteers of ESD No. 2 serve the communities of Hull, Daisetta and Raywood.

Board members said they will continue exploring opportunities to expand the district in the future, which could help the department reach its goal of full 24-hour staffed coverage sooner.

Officials said residents can take comfort in knowing that trained firefighters and volunteers are ready to respond when emergencies occur.
