
Dr. Allen Ray “Doc” Griffin, a cherished member of the Liberty, Texas community, passed away on March 15, 2026, in Liberty at the age of 76. Born on May 18, 1949, in Liberty, Allen spent his life deeply rooted in the town he loved. Allen graduated from Liberty High School in 1967 and went on to pursue higher education at the University of Houston. There, he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1973, launching a career dedicated to caring for the eyes of Liberty County residents for over 40 years. Known affectionately as “Doc,” Allen’s professional contributions left a lasting impact on those who sought his care.
Beyond his professional life, Allen was a caring family man. He is survived by his son Bradley Walker Griffin and daughter-in-law Lee Ann Harper Griffin; his daughter Kari Lynn LaRue and son-in-law John D. LaRue, Jr.; and his beloved grandchildren Harper Claire Griffin, James Cooper Griffin, Ryleigh Jean LaRue, and John D. LaRue, III. He is also survived by his brothers Harold Lamar Griffin and William Prophitt ‘Bill’ Griffin, Jr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents William Prophitt Griffin, Sr. and Velma Griffitts, as well as his brother James Richard ‘Jimmy’ Griffin.
Allen’s passions extended far beyond his work. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a life-long supporter of all things Houston Cougars. His enthusiasm for these pursuits brought him great happiness throughout his life. A dedicated member of the Liberty community, Allen was actively involved in the Liberty Rotary Club and served on the Liberty Independent School District (LISD) school board. His commitment to service reflected his deep care for the people around him and his desire to make a positive difference. Dr. Allen Ray “Doc” Griffin will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose legacy lives on through those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
