Dayton ISD sixth graders participate in Lamar University literacy STAAR camp at WWJH

Sixth-grade students in Dayton Independent School District at Woodrow Wilson Junior High (WWJH) are strengthening their reading skills and building confidence through the Lamar University Literacy STAAR Camp, hosted in partnership with the Nancy Evans Center at Lamar University.

The four-day camp began Friday and continues this week, focusing on key English Language Arts (ELA) skills designed to support student success on the STAAR assessment.

Presenters from Lamar University are working directly with students, providing targeted instruction and strategies to help them grow as readers and test-takers.

The camp emphasizes both skill development and confidence-building, reinforcing the idea that when students read, they succeed.

“Opportunities like this give our students the tools and confidence they need to be successful,” said Superintendent Dr. Travis Young. “When we invest in literacy, we are investing in their future, and we are grateful for our partnership with Lamar University and the Nancy Evans Center for supporting our students every step of the way.”

Dayton ISD is partnering with Lamar University and the Nancy Evans Center to help ensure students are prepared for success in the classroom and beyond.
