Melvin Whitmire Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, joined his heavenly Father on March 31, 2026, in Shepherd, Texas. Born on Oct. 17, 1938, in Cleveland, Texas, Melvin lived a life marked by devotion to his family and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys.
Melvin was a man who found great pleasure in the outdoors, particularly in hunting and sometimes fishing, activities that brought him peace and connection with nature. Above all, Melvin treasured his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly and held close to his heart.
Melvin’s enduring legacy is enriched by the steadfast love of his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Whitmire, who stood by his side throughout their many years together. He is also survived by his children: Pamela Elaine Everette and her husband Thomas, Melvin C. Whitmire, Jr. and his wife Pamela, and Laretta Pharr and her husband Steven. The joy of his life extended to his grandchildren—Justin Whitmire, Hannah Brown, Kaitie Irwin, Niki Buckner, Shellie Gregory, Julie Manuel, Becky Norris, and Michael Manuel—and his great-grandchildren who bring comfort and happiness to the family. He was part of a large and loving family that includes his brothers—Royce Whitmire, Lubbie Whitmire and his wife Paulette, Percy Whitmire and his wife Kathy, Rex Whitmire and his wife Diane, and Ricky Whitmire—and his sister, Louise Essery. They, along with many other family members and treasured friends, will deeply feel the loss of a truly remarkable man.
Melvin is welcomed into the gates of heaven by his beloved parents, Cammid and Addie Whitmire; his brothers, Marvin Whitmire and Edward Whitmire; and his sisters, Settie Bullock and Aline Strickland.
