Dwayne Stovall has suspended his campaign for U.S. House District 9 and announced his endorsement of fellow Republican candidate Dan Mims.

Congressional District 9 is a newly formed district that includes all of Liberty County and portions of east Harris County.

In a statement released to supporters late Monday night, Feb. 16, Stovall said he made the decision after careful consideration.

“This evening, I made the decision to suspend my campaign and endorse Dan Mims to be our next representative in Congress. Given the current state of the race, the best thing I can do for our district, and for Texas, is to support a likeminded candidate who shares my values and has the resources to make it through the primary and win what will likely be a May runoff election. I can’t thank my supporters enough, and I know this may appear sudden, but I’ve given it a lot of thought and am confident it is the right thing to do. I am encouraging all my supporters to vote for Dan Mims, and with his victory our district will have a representative who will put our interests before his own,” he wrote.

Stovall said he plans to actively support Mims on the campaign trail.

“I am proud to support Dan, and I will be enthusiastically campaigning for him and with him in Liberty and Harris counties in the coming weeks. And with your help we can stop outsiders from purchasing this seat, and finally elect one of our own,” he said. “As always, God bless you and your families, and God bless Texas. Adios.”

Mims responded to the endorsement with a statement praising Stovall’s conservative record and shared priorities.

Regarding Stovall’s announcement, Mims said, “Dwayne Stovall is a steadfast advocate for limited government and fiscal responsibility, I consider those to be cornerstones of my campaign, and I am honored to have a rock-solid Constitutional conservative like Dwayne backing my campaign. With his help we will achieve our common goals for this campaign — electing a representative from the private sector who is not beholden to DC special interests or campaign benefactors from outside our district.”
