J. Ed Smith

J. Ed Smith, age 84, of Houston, passed away at his residence June 30, 2018 with his loving family by his side. Ed was born September 25, 1933 in Beaumont, TX, son of the late John Nick Smith and Ruth Alice Davis Smith. Ed graduated from French High School in Beaumont, TX and then went on and attended the University Of Texas in Austin and graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering. He worked as an engineer all his life, working for Miller Lents LTD and then operated his own business, Natural Resource Management. In his spare time Ed was huge in genealogy and loved classical and jazz music. Ed was a Longhorn Alumni and loved his Longhorn Football.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Mary Lou Vincent, brothers; John Roscoe “Jake” Smith and Horace Fred “Shorty” Smith. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughters; Melinda Smith Johnson of Greenville, SC, Allison Smith Hill of Houston, TX, grandchildren; Nicholas McCoy Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Cameron Christopher Hill of Houston, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in Ed’s memory to the American Heart Association.

Before creating Bluebonnet News in 2018, Vanesa Brashier was a community editor for the Houston Chronicle/Houston Community Newspapers. During part of her 12 years at the newspapers, she was assigned as the digital editor and managing editor for the Humble Observer, Kingwood Observer, East Montgomery County Observer and the Lake Houston Observer, and the editor of the Dayton News, Cleveland Advocate and Eastex Advocate.
