Tarkington fire still under investigation

Smoke billows from the entrance to Dollar General in Tarkington Sunday after a fire broke out around 10 p.m.

Two days after a fire destroyed the Dollar General store on SH 321 in Tarkington, authorities are still trying to determine a cause for the blaze.

Liberty County Fire Marshal Bill Hergemueller says his office is working on the case with the state fire marshal’s office and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and it could take a several more days before the investigation concludes.

“We’ve obtained the footage but we are waiting on the unit to dry out before we can look at the video,” he said.

An investigator with Dollar General’s insurance company also is expected to review the case with the fire marshal. So far, the investigation has determined that the fire originated in the back of the store, according to the fire marshal.

“That’s the area we are concentrating on right now,” Hergemueller said.
