Lightning blamed for oil tank fire in Hardin

A group of oil storage tanks on FM 834 in Hardin were set on fire Wednesday morning by a lightning strike. The top of one of the tanks was blown a few hundred feet away, according to Brett Audilet, spokesperson for Hardin Volunteer Fire Department.

A group of oil storage tanks on FM 834 West in Hardin caught on fire Wednesday morning as a thunderstorm passed through the area. Lightning is being blamed for starting the blaze.

The lid of the first tank struck by lightning was blown a few hundred feet away, according to Brett Audilet, a spokesperson for Hardin Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters from Hardin, Liberty and Hull-Daisetta kept the fire contained and kept it from spreading further.

Liberty County Hazmat also responded to the scene.
