Descendants of Dayton watchman learn more about early law enforcement

Larry Wadzeck (left, back row) is pictured with the family of Louis "Frenchy" Cashat, known as one of the first Dayton watchmen. Pictured with him (left to right) are Jason Potts, Tonya Smikal, Glenn Smikal, Maranda Smikal, Sheryl Dudley, David Smikal and Mandy Smikal.

Descendants of Louis “Frenchy” Cashat turned out Monday night to hear a presentation from the Dayton Historical Society on the Dayton watchmen. Night Watchman Cashat was killed in action, the only officer killed in action in Dayton’s history.

The program was presented by Larry Wadzeck and others who told the history of the Dayton Police Department, from before it was officially established in 1956.

Organized law enforcement began in 1930 with a city marshal and a night watchman. The Dayton Police Department was officially organized in 1956, with Joe Caballero as its first police chief.
