LCSO: Argument over sleeping arrangements leads to shooting

A 22-year-old Liberty County man was shot in an alleged dispute over sleeping arrangements at a home on CR 2352 around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, authorities say.

According to Capt. Ken DeFoor, spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, James Nelms was shot once in the calf of his leg by 78-year-old Jerry L. Griffin.

Nelms met with sheriff’s deputies and Liberty County EMS at CR 2010. He was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he was treated and later released.

DeFoor said Griffin alleged he felt threatened by Nelms in the dispute and fired three shots with a .32 caliber handgun into the floor. One of those shots missed, hitting Nelms.

The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
