A father-and-son outing turned tragic Sunday afternoon when the son was killed in a two-vehicle accident south of Devers. The accident occurred around 5:42 p.m. on SH 61 at CR 109.

According to Trooper Austin Gillham, Robert Marberry, 47, of Liberty, and his 76-year-old father, Fred Marberry, were traveling southbound on SH 61 in a 2006 Lincoln SGL Towncar and turned into the path of a northbound Ford F-150 driven by Brian Stanton, 35, of Beaumont.

The impact hit the side of the vehicle where Robert Marberry was sitting as a passenger. He was killed in the crash. His father, who was driving, was seriously injured and airlifted to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston. It is believed they were going fishing when the crash occurred, Gillham said.

Stanton, his wife and children were not injured and did not require medical treatment, according to Gillham.

Marberry was a beloved member of the Liberty community and a longtime employee of Whataburger Restaurant in Liberty.
