A former Corrigan police officer and Cleveland resident, Joe Marvin Robertson Jr., was arrested on Friday on charges of Theft by Public Servant and Official Oppression. Sometime early Monday morning, he died from an apparent suicide in Cleveland.

Robertson had been employed by Corrigan Police Department since May 2019.  In 2018, Robertson was working for the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office when he was jailed in Cleveland for failing to pay outstanding traffic tickets. Robertson was placed on administrative leave at SJCSO briefly while the issue was resolved.

At about the same time as his arrest in Cleveland, Robertson filed to run as a Democratic candidate for Liberty County Clerk, a seat he lost to the Republican candidate in the general election.

Polk County District Attorney Lee Hon confirmed Monday morning that Robertson was facing charges but could not comment further because the investigation is ongoing. The investigation into Robertson was made by the Texas Rangers.

Robertson was a graduate of Cleveland High School, Angelina College, where he earned a degree in nursing, and Houston Community College, where he earned a degree in police science.
