N. Church St. in Dayton to close permanently starting Sept. 9

This Google image shows Church Street at US 90. Starting Sept. 9, Church St. between US 90 and Cook St. will be closed permanently.

Beginning Monday, September 9, N. Church St. will be permanently closed between Cook St. and US 90. The block, adjacent to City Hall, the City’s Development & Planning Office and the CrossRoads park, will be converted to a pedestrian walkway between each facility.

City Council approved the permanent closure at its August meeting due to safety concerns on both North and South Church Streets. While vehicles parked on the north section of the street impair visibility for pedestrians and motorists alike, the concern on the southern portion of the street was southbound Church St. traffic accelerating to beat cross-traffic on Hwy 90 posing additional traffic hazards. The closure reduces the potential for crashes and congestion while streamlining traffic flow on Hwy 90.

Access to South Church St. from US 90 will not be affected in either direction.
