Tarkington VFD gears up for barbecue fundraiser

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 28, when Tarkington firefighters host their annual barbecue fundraiser. Fire Chief Paul Gregory says a lot is riding on the success of this year’s event.

“We would like to have the turnout like we had last year when it was standing-room only,” Gregory said. “This is our only fundraiser this year.”

In years past, Tarkington firefighters organized Fill the Boot collections at the intersection of FM 2518 and SH 105, but Gregory said that due to some unforeseen issues they are no longer able to collect money at that location.

The barbecue fundraiser will have items for big appetites and small budgets, with sandwiches starting at $5 and beef sold by the pound for $12.

The meal plates (which does not include single sandwiches) are $10 for sandwich and one-meat plates; $12 for two-meat plates; $14 for three-meat plates; half-chickens for $8 and beef by the pound for $12 per pound. Each meal plate includes pinto beans, potato salad, bread, trimmings and sweet or unsweetened tea.

No tickets are needed in advance. Food will be served on a first-come, first-served basis, so come early. Meals will be sold starting at 10 a.m.

The live auction begins at noon. Items already donated include gift cards to Ranch Hand Restaurant, two cases of strawberry jam from Mallard Farms in Nacogdoches, two 50-inch televisions donated by R.T. Ellis Excavation, and tool sets and various other items donated by Cannon’s Farm and Ranch Grocery. As more auction items are donated, they will be posted online on Tarkington VFD’s Facebook page.

If you would like to make a donation, email Chief Gregory at paul-gregory@tarkingtonvfd.net or leave a message at the fire station by calling 281-592-7800.
