Identity of sign thieves sought

This grainy image is a screen-capture taken from a surveillance video. It reportedly shows the theft of county-owned road closure signs.

Liberty County Pct. 4 Commissioner Leon Wilson is asking for the public’s help in identifying an alleged thief who stole signs warning residents of high water and road closures Thursday evening.

Video surveillance of the area shows a dark-colored truck pulling up near one of the signs in the Woodland Hills Subdivision. Then a passenger gets out, picks up a sign, puts it in the bed of the pickup and gets back in the vehicle.

According to Wilson, the truck appears to be a black four-door low-rider pickup with black spoke wheels. Besides the theft of the sign, Wilson is upset that the persons appeared to have no concern for the potential danger they created for motorists.

“The sign was in a roadway that had close to three feet of water on it at one time,” he said.

Anyone with information about the sign thefts is asked to contact the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at 936-336-4500.
