The Texas Music Office designated the City of Mont Belvieu as the state’s 57th Music Friendly Texas Certified Community during the Mont Belvieu City Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 13.
Earlier this month, Governor Greg Abbott applauded the City of Mont Belvieu for its efforts in working with the Texas Music Office (TMO) after completing the multi-step certification process to gain this designation. The Music Friendly Texas program, the first in the nation since introduced by TMO in 2016, seeks to foster music business-related economic development and job creation in Texas cities and communities.
“Congratulations to the City of Mont Belvieu on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation,” said Governor Abbott. “Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state. Music Friendly Texas Communities certified by the Texas Music Office work hard to attract and develop the local music industry to boost local job creation and economic growth. In fact, with support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounted for more than 192,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generated more than $26 billion in economic activity statewide in 2022. Together, we will continue to work alongside communities in every region of our state to amplify their growth and success.”
“As our city continues to grow, so does the audience and demand for live music,” said Mayor Joey McWilliams. “We’ve had such an amazing response from the community to our Rock the Park concert series – we see Mont Belvieu becoming a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community as a natural extension of that. We can’t wait to have more music in Mont Belvieu.”
“Working on behalf of our community to help make Mont Belvieu a Music Friendly Texas Community has been exciting,” said Mont Belvieu Communications and Marketing Director Brian Ligon. “Our local musicians, music educators, venue owners, and others have been part of this process. Knowing that Mont Belvieu is committed to growing the music scene and music education for our residents is something we are incredibly proud of.”
Local music educators, music-related business owners, and other community stakeholders attended the council meeting in support of Mont Belvieu’s new Music Friendly Texas designation. Additionally, Communications and Marketing Director Brian Ligon announced the addition of a page dedicated to music in Mont Belvieu to the city’s website, www.montbelvieu.net/music. The page not only explains the Music Friendly Texas program, but features a music calendar that residents can use to enjoy music related events in the area.
After the recognition of becoming Music Friendly Texas certified, Parks and Recreation Director Dustin Schubert replaced Ligon at the podium to announce the 2024 Rock the Park concert line-up. Since 2019, this free concert series at Mont Belvieu’s City Park has thrilled local audiences by bringing in popular regional and national acts.
“Our Rock the Park concerts are always a lot of fun,” said Parks and Recreation Director Dustin Schubert. “We love being able to bring the thrill of live music to the heart of Mont Belvieu every summer. It’s a great chance for folks to grab a lawn chair, hang out with friends and neighbors, and have a rockin’ good time.”
The 2024 Rock the Park line-up includes:
- May 10 – The Molly Ringwalds
- June 7 – Shinyribs
- July 4th Celebration – Jon Finney, Cory Morrow, ReaLynn
