Woodrow Wilson Junior High (WWJH) has embraced the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) approach by implementing the High 5 Restorative Behavior Program in the current school year.
This tiered framework, as defined by the Center for PBIS, aims to support students in various aspects – behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When executed effectively, PBIS enhances social-emotional competence, academic success, and overall school climate, while also promoting teacher well-being.
Under the High 5 Restorative Behavior Program at WWJH, students are acknowledged for exemplary conduct that goes beyond the norms of a “Good Student.” Simple yet impactful actions such as picking up trash without being prompted, assisting peer in retrieving a dropped backpacks or items, or holding the door open for a staff member are celebrated.
Teachers record these actions, accumulating points for the students involved. Upon amassing 50 points in a semester, students become eligible for a grand prize drawing, with the latest winner being sixth-grader Kord Larsen, who earned a pair of Air Jordan shoes.
Principal Ross Cullins expressed his admiration for Kord’s consistent positive attitude and behavior, highlighting his remarkable contributions towards his peers and staff.
“Congratulations, Mr. Kord Larsen and to his parents. Your son Kord, is an extraordinary person! We are proud of him!” said Cullins.
Principal Cullins urges parents to continue guiding their children in making thoughtful choices.
