Cleveland police have identified alleged suspect in shooting outside funeral home

Cleveland Police Chief Darrel Broussard says his agency has identified the alleged suspect in a shooting incident that took place on March 10 outside of Neal Funeral Home, situated on the 200 block of S. Washington Ave.

According to Chief Broussard, surveillance video obtained from Neal Funeral Home captures the alleged gunman leaving the premises in the company of his wife’s family after making funeral arrangements for one of her relatives. The footage shows the woman departing the funeral home parking lot in a sedan and waiting for an opportunity to turn southbound on Washington Ave.

Another surveillance video reveals the man fumbling around in the backseat of his SUV before abruptly pulling out of the parking lot and lining up behind the sedan. Shortly after the sedan departs, the SUV is seen spinning around just moments before gunshots echo across the parking lot.

As the situation unfolds, family members are seen reacting to the confusion and danger. One family member is captured on a separate camera angle ducking behind monuments after realizing that the gunman is driving by a second time and firing his weapon. Subsequently, the remaining family members near the funeral home recognize the gunfire and begin to react, as the driver of the SUV speeds off.

Chief Broussard said police investigators are actively working to persuade the suspect to surrender peacefully for questioning. However, the suspect has not complied thus far, leading authorities to consider alternative methods for bringing him into custody.

Amid concerns about the possible motive behind the shooting, with the alleged suspect reportedly posting on social media hours earlier about having an “itchy trigger finger,” questions were raised about the potential for a hate crime, especially given the proximity of a Christian church next door to the funeral home and the fact that the man is believed to be Muslim.

Chief Broussard addressed these concerns by stating that, despite the man’s reported social media activity, he does not believe this case will be classified as a hate crime. He mentioned that while he has not personally seen the Facebook post, the District Attorney’s Office and investigators in his department are aware of it.

The investigation into this concerning shooting incident outside Neal Funeral Home continues, with the authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in resolving this case. Chief Broussard said that the suspect’s name will be released once he has been arrested and charged.
