Cleveland ISD has reversed its decision to hold school as usual on Monday, April 8. After posting on Facebook earlier this week that students will not be allowed to leave their classrooms or facility to view the solar eclipse, the school district has decided to close school on Monday.
“After much consideration and research over the last week into the importance of the approaching solar eclipse, I have decided to close Cleveland ISD on Monday, April 8,” Superintendent Stephen McCanless told district employees in an email.
Citing that the upcoming eclipse is not just “an eclipse” and will be “the eclipse for Texas,” McCanless went on to say that the decision to close campuses will allow students to be home with their family and friends to experience this once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity to make memories, take pictures and make videos together.
“The next [solar] eclipse is not until 2044 and it will be nowhere near Texas,” McCanless said.
He added that students and their families should follow the recommended safety protocols for properly viewing the solar eclipse.
School will resume on Tuesday, April 9.
