Last week, the Dayton Rotary Club gathered to welcome Liberty County Judge Jay Knight. Rotarian Brooks Hiller took the opportunity to introduce Judge Knight as part of the Rotary program.

During the meeting, Judge Knight provided a comprehensive update on several ongoing projects within Liberty County and its surroundings. As a member of the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) Board of Directors, Judge Knight plays a pivotal role, serving on three committees: Finance & Budget, Audit, and Water Resources.

Emphasizing the importance of having a representative from Liberty County actively participating in the workings of HGAC, Judge Knight expressed his pride in representing the interests of Liberty County. Under his leadership as county judge, Liberty County has secured close to $125 million in grants, dedicated to numerous projects, both past and present.

One of the highlights of Judge Knight’s address was an update on the status of the US 90 and SH 146 overpasses. He revealed that the commencement of the overpass construction is anticipated for this fall, with an estimated completion timeline of 18-24 months. While conveying this optimistic news, Knight also cautioned the Rotarians about the impending traffic challenges during the construction phase.

In addition to the overpass update, Judge Knight also briefed the Rotarians on the planning and progress towards implementing a countywide drainage plan. As the program drew to a close, the Rotary members engaged in an interactive session, posing various questions regarding Knight’s responsibilities as county judge.

An interesting revelation emerged during this session – Judge Knight has officiated over 700 weddings, with about 400 of those conducted in Spanish. This underscored not only his dedication to his role as County Judge, but also his commitment to serving the diverse community within Liberty County.

In conclusion, Rotary Club President Ann Maria Mitchell extended her gratitude to Judge Knight for the presentation and led the Rotarians in the 4-Way Test.
