Alvin Burress announces candidacy for Dayton City Council, Position 2

Dayton City Councilman Alvin Burress gives a welcome address at the Boots and Bullets fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023.

Alvin Burress has officially declared his candidacy for Position 2 on the Dayton City Council in the upcoming May 4 election. With a long history of public service, Burress is no stranger to the Dayton City Council, having previously served three terms.

A dedicated resident of Dayton for 16 years, Burress brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the community to his candidacy. In addition to his professional role as a process supervisor for Covestro, he also extends his commitment to public safety as an EMT and rescue firefighter within the company. Furthermore, his 13-year-long dedication to the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department demonstrates his unwavering support for the city and its residents.

As a property owner in the city of Dayton, Burress is firmly dedicated to upholding fiscal responsibility within the council. His pledge to exercise careful financial management reflects his conscientious regard for the allocation of tax resources, ensuring that every dollar is used for the benefit of the community.

When Burress served previously on Council, he was instrumental in assisting Dayton VFD with achieving its ISO rating of 2, which put Dayton in the Top 5 percent of all fire departments in the U.S. Through this achievement, Dayton city residents may have realized cost savings on their homeowners insurance policies.

In addition, Burress is one of the champions and organizers of the Boots and Bullets fundraisers in Dayton, an annual event that generates funds for Dayton VFD’s operational expenses.

Burress admits he is dedicated to ensuring Dayton’s growth is both responsible and well-planned while not losing sight of the tight community core and small-town appeal that residents of Dayton love and hope to see continue.

“The most important thing to me is as the city grows, we must manage the growth responsibly and mindfully. We have to think about the future in our decisions. Every decision we make impacts the future 10 years down the road, and this is not something I take lightly,” Burress said. “I humbly ask for your vote in the May 4 election.”

Alvin and his wife, Dana, have lived in Dayton for 16 years. The couple shares two sons, Phoenix and Remington. Dana taught second grade at a private Christian school before retiring and now works for Dayton ISD as the art teacher for Richter Elementary. Public service is at the heart of their family, and Burress hopes to continue serving residents of Dayton.
