In an effort to enhance law enforcement coverage, Liberty County is set to see an increase in the number of state troopers patrolling its highways and roads.

Currently, the county’s DPS team comprises eight troopers, a figure that will grow to 10 in the coming months. The two new spots were approved by DPS last month.

Sgt. Rob Willoughby, supervisor for the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety, stated that this will be the first time the county will benefit from a total of 10 state troopers.

Willoughby said there has been a long-standing need for additional troopers in the county for several years and he has advocated on behalf of the county. The impending arrivals, Clayton Lewis and Jacques Nguyen, are currently stationed in Buna and Orange, respectively.

Lewis is expected to join the Liberty County team in May, with Nguyen’s deployment slated within the next six months. Despite being primarily stationed in Liberty, both troopers will operate across the entire county, like their colleagues.

The recent expansion of the Liberty County DPS office goes beyond the addition of Lewis and Nguyen. In January, Trooper Natalie Aguirre, previously assigned to Beaumont, joined the team under Willoughby’s supervision.

The existing troopers in the Liberty County office, under Willoughby’s leadership, include Troopers Nathanial Godfrey, William Koen, Corey Prantil, Haley Smith, John Broadway, Levi Wilcox, and Austin Alexander.

Mandates of continuous trooper presence in Colony Ridge, the county’s most populous area, mean that the community will have round-the-clock coverage of at least one trooper on duty day and night.
