On April 30, 2024, at 3:08 p.m., Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett issued a Declaration of a Local State of Disaster for the City as a response to the rising water levels of the Trinity River.

The City of Liberty emphasized the imminent threat of a disaster with the potential for widespread and severe property damage, injuries, and even loss of life.

According to city officials, the Trinity River Authority (TRA) is currently releasing 94,300 cubic feet per second, and the river is expected to crest at 30.8 feet by 7 a.m. on Friday, May 3. The flood stage for the Trinity River at Liberty is 26.0 feet.

It is anticipated that the river level will persist above the flood stage for the upcoming weeks, potentially leading to flooding of roadways and properties in low-lying areas adjacent to the Trinity River.

City authorities advised citizens to exercise caution and adhere to warning signs, particularly when navigating roadways in these affected regions, especially during nighttime hours.

This declaration of a disaster immediately activates the City’s emergency management plan, which is set to endure for up to 7 days from the date of the declaration or until it is renewed by the City Council.
