The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to residents after receiving reports of scam phone calls targeting citizens with false claims of warrants. The callers, posing as officials from the Sheriff’s Office, allege that the individual has failed to appear for Jury Duty, resulting in the issuance of a warrant for their arrest.
According to a recent complaint received by the Sheriff’s Office, the caller not only threatened arrest but also demanded a specific payment over the phone.
The deceptive tactics used by the scammers include referencing the names of actual Liberty County Sheriff Office employees, such as Deputy Chance Maddox and Captain David Meyers, in an attempt to lend credibility to their fraudulent scheme.
Meyers, a LCSO spokesperson, expressed concern over the resurgence of these “spoof calls,” emphasizing the urgency of alerting the public to this ongoing threat. He stated, “It has been almost a year ago that this happened, and it appears they are back to scam more citizens who reside in Liberty County.”
Sheriff Bobby Rader said the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office does not conduct any business related to warrants or accept payments for warrants over the phone. He urged the public to remain vigilant.
“We do not want to see this happen to anyone, so please help us spread the word so others don’t fall victim to this scam,” Rader said.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any communication purporting to be from law enforcement agencies. The Sheriff’s Office encourages individuals who have encountered similar suspicious calls to report the incidents promptly.
