Two people rescued after being swept off FM 563

It’s been a few days since the area saw substantial rainfall, but flooding conditions and associated dangers from flooding persist. Two people found themselves in an unfortunate situation Thursday morning, May 23, when their car was swept off FM 563 south of Liberty in flood waters.

According to Liberty Fire Chief Brian Hurst, firefighters were dispatched to the scene but the two people were rescued by a third party with a boat prior to firefighters’ arrival.

The incident unfolded as the two people were traveling by car along FM 563 and encountered one of the areas in the roadway that has been impassable from recent flooding.

Hurst said it is a reminder that even a small amount of moving water can sweep a car from a roadway.

“The saying ‘Turn around, don’t drown’ holds true,” said Hurst. “It only takes a few inches of water in the road to move a car.”

Flooding conditions will linger for a few more days, he said. Currently, the Trinity River at the Liberty bridge is 30.15 feet, still a foot above major flood stage – 29 feet at the Liberty bridge.
