Dear Cleveland ISD community,
Back in May, I had sent an email about the Red Cross Shelter opening at Pine Burr Elementary. Out of 2,000 staff members, only 1 person replied to me insisting we not do this due to the safety risks and dangers. The district moved forward and successfully hosted people in need.
I am happy to report that the Red Cross Shelter officially closed at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, June 6). After having about 70 people, they had gotten down to three people.
Red Cross, with the support and help of Cleveland ISD, was successful in sheltering and helping locate people into permanent housing. Our Pine Burr facility was left extremely clean with no damage.
Cleveland ISD and the culture we are building focuses on safety and we will never put students or staff in harm’s way. The reason this was successful is because Cleveland ISD set our own rules and expectations and monitored 24/7, not allowing any disruption or distractions.
As long as a good plan is in place and we stick to our values and expectations, then Cleveland ISD will always assist humanity if the need arises.
Thank you all for trusting the Cleveland ISD Administration in helping mankind and shaping the culture for our district.
Superintendent Stephen McCanless, Cleveland ISD
