Hurricane Beryl causes extensive damage to San Jacinto County Detention Center, Sheriff’s Office

Hurricane Beryl has inflicted extensive damage on the San Jacinto County Detention Center and Sheriff’s Office. The storm, which struck on July 8, unleashed high winds that peeled back a significant portion of the roof.

This initial damage led to the development of severe water leaks throughout the facility, rendering the jail unsafe for both inmates and employees.

In response to this crisis, Sheriff Greg Capers has collaborated with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, San Jacinto County Commissioners Court, Texas Department of Emergency Management, and several other agencies to ensure the continuity of law enforcement operations and public safety.

To address the immediate safety concerns, detention operations will be relocated to portable buildings outside the Sheriff’s Office in Coldspring. During the roof repairs, all inmates will be temporarily housed in Polk, Brazos, Walker, and Houston counties. This plan has received full approval from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Sheriff Capers assures the public that there will be no delay or reduction in law enforcement services within the county.

Ongoing evaluations are being conducted to identify any additional damages to the building, including potential harm to electronic operating systems caused by numerous power surges during the storm.

Sheriff Capers acknowledges the inconvenience this situation poses to county employees and the public and requests patience and understanding as the agency navigates this emergency.
