Cleveland police arrest alleged intoxicated man carrying fake skull, firearm

On the morning of Thursday, July 25, downtown Cleveland, Texas, witnessed an unusual and concerning event noticed by business owners, employees, and passing motorists.

A young man reportedly was observed walking down Houston Street near the old Texan Theatre in Cleveland carrying what appeared to be a human skull and a Red Ryder BB gun, prompting immediate concern among onlookers.

Witnesses reported that the man was yelling loudly and waving the firearm at cars as he walked into the middle of the street. He repeatedly crossed the street in front of trucks, causing drivers to swerve to avoid hitting him.

Cleveland Police Chief Darrel Broussard commented on the situation, noting that while the skull appeared “weird,” investigators determined it to be a replica plastic skull with wires inside. Despite the initial shock, it was evident that the skull was not real after a quick inspection.

The man’s alleged suspicious behavior led a local businessman to tackle him to the ground, detaining him until police arrived.

Chief Broussard confirmed that the 23-year-old man, identified as Jonathan Brian Pursley, of Rye, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication and was held in the Cleveland jail.
