Dayton ISD sets standard for new school year during week of administrator training

Dayton ISD campus and district administrators kicked off the 2024-25 school year with a week filled with planning, training, team-building, and updates.

On Monday, July 22, the entire administrative team gathered for the morning at the Administrators’ Academy. Dr. Travis Young, assistant superintendent of Student Services, opened the meeting, addressing an audience of over 60 campus and district leaders. He emphasized the importance of striving to be the best leaders possible by setting high expectations, holding themselves accountable, and fostering a positive school culture across the district.

Young said, “To do this, we must set high expectations, hold ourselves accountable, and continue to grow a positive school culture across the district.”

The next speaker was Mr. Geoff McCracken, executive director of UIL Athletics and Fine Arts, who also serves as DISD’s Title IX Coordinator. He provided updates on legal issues regarding Title IX and conducted the required Title IX training for the year. Following him, Mrs. Abigail Cumbie, Director of Multilingual Programs, presented an overview of best practices to support diverse students and shared linguistically sustaining practices for language acquisition.

Dr. Stephanie Moye, DISD director of Personnel Services, reviewed acceptable and appropriate social media use as per TASB guidance, and covered professional dress code expectations for staff according to the Employee Handbook. She concluded her presentation by highlighting additional support that Personnel Services can offer to campuses and other district departments.

On the safety front, Mrs. Nelly Tinkle, DISD Executive Director of Support Services, reminded leaders of the existing safety protocols and practices in DISD. She discussed various ongoing TEA changes aimed at keeping students and staff safe, including the new Sentinel Dashboard from TEA that will house a range of data and information.

Mrs. Shanna McCracken, DISD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, then led the audience in reflecting on success criteria and key practices for achievement based on TEA’s Effective Schools Framework. At the end of the morning training session, Dr. Young engaged the group with a fun and interactive team-building activity. DISD administrators left the meeting energized, informed, and ready to finalize their preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

Throughout the week, DISD administrators participated in various training sessions, including a high-energy T-TESS Calibration Training with Region 4’s Mike Walker; Accountability Changes presented by Region 4’s Angel Lazano; Eureka Math training; Amplify ELAR training; and DISD’s Multilingual Department’s training on Content-Based Language Instruction. The week concluded with the annual Bilingual Symposium held at the Dayton Community Center, featuring guest speaker Nancy Motley, Chief Learning & Innovation Officer and senior educational consultant for Seidlitz Education, who specializes in literacy and sheltered instruction. She has authored several books, including “7 Steps to a Language-Rich, Interactive Classroom.”

At the end of the week, Dr. Young stated, “Dayton ISD Administrators had a productive week enhancing their leadership skills through a range of training sessions and workshops. Everyone is excited about the upcoming school year and cannot wait to welcome back our students.”
