On the evening of Monday, August 5, a man reportedly experiencing suicidal ideations was successfully rescued from a sandbar near the Trinity River bridge at US 90 in Liberty.
The rescue effort, which took place around 9 p.m., was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies and highlighted the bravery and quick thinking of those involved.
The man’s plight was first noticed by a kayaker navigating the river, who observed the individual in apparent distress on the sandbar, approximately 700-800 yards south of the bridge. Concerned for the man’s welfare, the kayaker promptly reported the situation to authorities.
Due to recent rains, the Trinity River’s water levels are higher than normal, creating unsafe conditions for the Liberty Fire Department to deploy its boat.
In response, the Liberty County Fire Marshal’s Office was called upon to assist with their rescue boat, providing the necessary means to reach the stranded man safely.
Texas Game Warden Jason Avalos also responded to the emergency call. Together, the rescue team reached the man and brought him to safety.
The man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. He is said to be in his mid-50s. Due to the nature of the incident, his name will not be disclosed.
