Golden Oldies Reunion helps keep H-D Bobcat pride alive

The Golden Oldies give a "Go Bobcats" cheer at the end of their annual luncheon on Friday, Oct. 4.

Every year during Hull-Daisetta ISD’s homecoming celebration, alumni from Hull-Daisetta High School who graduated more than 50 years ago gather for the Golden Oldies Reunion. This year, on Friday, Oct. 4, the Class of 1974 was welcomed into the group during a special luncheon in the high school gymnasium.

The event began with a meal, a welcome address by Kitty Key and Hull-Daisetta Superintendent Tim Bartram, and a performance from the high school cheerleaders. Alumni took a moment to honor classmates and former teachers who have passed away since last year’s reunion. This tradition, known as the roll call for the absent, is an emotional reminder of the strong bonds formed at the school.

The Golden Oldies tradition began in 1978 when the Hull-Daisetta Class of 1928 gathered to celebrate its 50th anniversary. From that celebration, the group decided to form an organization to honor each class as they reached the 50-year milestone. Nelson Stovall was chosen as the first president and served until his passing in 1988. His successor, J.C. Bevers, led the group after Stovall’s death.

To continue his legacy, the group established the Nelson Stovall Scholarship Foundation, using funds donated in his memory. The first scholarships were awarded in 1990, and the foundation has grown ever since, now known as the Golden Oldies Scholarship Foundation. It awards scholarships annually to support the education of future Hull-Daisetta graduates.

The reunion is more than a look back—it’s a way to give back. Through the Foundation, the Golden Oldies continue to support students and keep the Bobcat pride alive.
