It wasn’t sirens but the sound of laughter and joyful conversations echoing through Cleveland Walmart on Friday, Dec. 6, as local law enforcement traded patrol duty for holiday cheer at the annual Shop With a Cop event. With shopping carts in hand and hearts full of generosity, officers partnered with 59 local children, making wish lists come true and spreading the magic of the Christmas season.
Organized each year by Sister Juanita Lewis and Resurrection Ministries, and supported by donations from Walmart and community donors, the event paired each child with a law enforcement officer for a special shopping spree.
Armed with $75 to spend on whatever their hearts desired, children excitedly picked items from the shelves, accompanied by parents and their officer partners. For many, the event was a moment of joy and relief during challenging times.
Cleveland Mayor Danny Lee was moved by the outpouring of generosity and the joy it brought to the children.
“This event is a display of love and togetherness in our community. Everyone just comes together and gives back to the community. My heart is just so full seeing how happy the children are,” Lee said.
More than a dozen peace officers from the Cleveland Police Department, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and the Pct. 5 and 6 Constable’s Offices volunteered their time for the event. Lewis commended their efforts, noting that many officers chipped in to cover overages for some children.
For Pct. 5 Constable David Hunter, the event struck a personal chord. He assisted five children from the Roberts family, who recently lost their home to a fire. Moved by their story, Hunter added $25 for each child to ensure they received everything they needed and wanted.
“Their mother said the donated toys and items will be greatly appreciated. Helping this family was the least I could do,” Hunter said.
Sister Lewis emphasized the spirit of giving that underpins the event, especially during tough economic times.
“We do this event with a spirit of giving—giving to people who are in need. Right now there are a lot of people in a crisis due to inflation and other economic issues,” Lewis said.
Pct. 6 Constable Zack Harkness expressed his gratitude to Walmart and the donors who made the event possible.
“Your support helped create a memorable and meaningful experience for the children and families who participated. This event also provides an opportunity for children to meet local law enforcement, engage in casual conversations, and build positive, personal connections with those who serve our community,” Harkness said.
