Liberty County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam calls posing as law enforcement

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to be cautious after receiving reports of scam phone calls targeting citizens with false claims of warrants.

The scammers, posing as law enforcement officials, have been calling individuals and falsely claiming they have an arrest warrant and must pay fines.

The callers are using the name of Chief Deputy Billy Knox to lend credibility to their fraudulent scheme. Victims are being pressured to pay fines immediately over the phone using a credit card. Chief Deputy Knox stressed that this is not a protocol used by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

“Fines are collected by court systems, not sheriff’s deputies,” said Knox. “The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office does not accept payments for warrants or fines over the phone. If you receive a call like this, do not provide any personal or financial information.”

The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that legitimate communication regarding fines or warrants will never involve phone payments. Residents are advised to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any communication claiming to be from law enforcement.

If you have fallen victim to these scammers or have information about the scam calls, please report the incident to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office immediately by calling 936-336-4500.
