John Scott “Scotty” Abshier, 53, of Raywood, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous fight against cancer.
Scotty was born Oct. 12, 1971 in Beaumont, Texas to parents John “Bubba” and Winnie Abshier, and was a longtime resident of Raywood, Texas. He was a graduate of Liberty High School and received his associate’s degree in Diesel Mechanics from Lamar Institute of Technology. Scotty was a Supervisor of the Critical Equipment Group at Motiva in Port Arthur, TX following his extensive career of industrial roles as a machinist and rotating equipment specialist. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Devers. Some of his primary hobbies included working on jet skis, racing vintage jet skis, dirt bikes, sail boating, and cattle ranching. He was an active member of the International Jet Sports Boating Association.
Scotty shared his parent’s work ethic and gave full attention in every endeavor. He and his brother, Cody, shared many interests which provided lots of time spent together making fun memories (some of which are only funny in hindsight.) The last several years were filled with many road trips to represent Abshier Brothers Racing with the Abshier family standing in as cheerleaders and pit crew.
Known for his quick smile and his kind and generous nature, Scotty was loved by friends and family alike for his humor. He was the first call when you needed help or advice, especially on any mechanical issues. His schedule was never too full to share his knowledge and his expansive tool collection.
Scotty always made Madison his top-priority and she was the joy of his life. Where you found Scotty, you would likely find Madison, whether he was recruiting her to be his assistant while working cows or maintaining the sailboat; their hobbies were mutually enjoyed. When he got a red dirt bike, 8 year old Madison got an identical one (miniature of course) and matching protective gear.
When Scotty met Trish, the love of his life, in 2012, she and her children immediately fit into the family as if they had been there all along; the sweet siblings that Madison had always wanted. He loved sharing his interests and his life with Trish, who never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and join in. Trish was his greatest supporter from the moment they began their relationship, and her selflessness and unbridled love for him sustained and comforted him until his final breath. They both lived out their wedding vows with the ultimate devotion.
Scotty was preceded in death by his father: John Bristley Abshier; parents-in-law: Darrell and Patricia Hicks; and brother-in-law: Buddy Hicks. He is survived by his wife of 12 years: Tricia “Trish” Hicks Abshier; daughter: Madison Abshier-Tharp and husband Colby; stepdaughter: Kelcie Parker and husband Garrison; stepson: Jayme Ancelet; mother: Winnie Parks Abshier; sister: Johnna LeDoux and husband Ernest; brother: Cody Abshier and wife Kristi; beloved nieces and nephews, and numerous other relatives and friends. He and his family are eternally grateful for the numerous thoughts, prayers, and visits over the last four years. They were a constant source of encouragement and comfort that gave him the strength to fight his battle.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel in Liberty with graveside services following at the Abshier Family Cemetery at the Abshier Family Ranch in Raywood, TX.
