Dayton HS band student to perform with Texas All-State band

Tania Rodriguez

Tania Rodriguez, a talented member of the Dayton High School Band, has earned the honor of performing with the Texas All-State 5A Band in San Antonio on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025. The performance will take place at the Henry B. González Convention Center as part of the 2025 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Clinic/Convention.

Rodriguez secured this prestigious opportunity through a rigorous competitive process held at the District, Region, and Area levels across the state.

She plays under the direction of Kevin Heckaman, a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, which boasts over 20,400 members and is headquartered in Austin. This marks Tania’s first time performing as part of a TMEA All-State ensemble. She is the child of Olivia Pacheco and Juan Rodriguez.

High school students selected for All-State concerts achieve the highest honor possible for a Texas music student. The journey to this achievement begins with approximately 70,000 students statewide auditioning for a chance to perform in one of 18 ensembles. TMEA organizes the Texas All-State competition, which involves auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions.

Musicians perform selected pieces for a panel of judges, who rank each instrument or voice part. Top-ranking musicians advance from their Region to compete at one of eight Area competitions. The highest-ranking musicians from these Area contests earn spots in TMEA All-State ensembles. Only the top 2.6 percent of students who audition are selected as All-State musicians.

Directed by nationally recognized conductors, All-State students participate in four days of intensive rehearsals during the TMEA Clinic/Convention. The event concludes with performances that draw thousands of attendees. For more information on All-State concerts and conductors, visit the Performances section at www.tmea.org/convention.
