Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center (LDRMC) is inviting the community to participate in nominating its nurses for the prestigious DAISY Award, an international recognition program that honors extraordinary nurses for their compassionate care. This marks the hospital’s inaugural participation in the DAISY Awards, which have been celebrated in healthcare institutions worldwide since 1999.
The DAISY Award was established by the family of Patrick Barnes, who passed away at the age of 33 after battling the autoimmune disease Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP). Throughout his eight-week hospitalization, his family witnessed firsthand the kindness, sensitivity, and dedication of the nurses who cared for him. Wanting to honor nurses for the impact they make on patients and their families, Barnes’ wife, Tena, helped establish the DAISY Foundation, turning their grief into a lasting tribute to nurses who provide compassionate, patient-centered care.
At LDRMC, nominations for the DAISY Award can be submitted by patients, family members, colleagues, or other hospital staff who have observed a nurse delivering outstanding care. The hospital’s Post-Discharge Call Coordinator, Dana Arthur, RN-BSN, is overseeing the nomination process.
“When our patients walk through the emergency room doors, they might see a banner mentioning the DAISY Award nominations,” Arthur said. “When a patient is admitted, we have ballots and a lockbox where patients, family members, and loved ones can submit the names of nurses they believe provided extraordinary care.”
Arthur emphasized the high level of care available at LDRMC, noting that the hospital plays a critical role in stabilizing patients, treating serious conditions, and transferring them when necessary.
“We take great pride in our care,” she added.
Patients who have received care at LDRMC are encouraged to visit the hospital to complete a nomination form. The deadline for nominations is April 16, and the winner will be announced on May 6, in celebration of National Nurses Day.
