Rick Ashe has been named the interim police chief for the City of Liberty, stepping into the role following the recent retirement of former Chief Gary Martin.
Ashe’s first day on the job was Wednesday, Feb. 19, and he will serve until city leaders appoint a permanent replacement.
Ashe brings extensive law enforcement experience to Liberty. He spent 27 years with the Temple Police Department, where he attained the rank of lieutenant in 2017. He later served as police chief in the Texas cities of Salado, Kenedy, and Morgan’s Point. Additionally, he previously held the position of president of the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA).
His appointment came through Clear Career Professionals, a headhunting firm that provides interim police chiefs to municipalities in transition.
Ashe, a resident of League City, is already familiar with Liberty Police Department. As an assessor for the Texas Police Chiefs Association, he performed LPD’s inspections last year to maintain its status as an accredited agency.
The search for a new police chief is expected to take approximately three months, according to Ashe.
Meanwhile, following Martin’s departure, Liberty Police Lt. Elaine Taylor has been placed on paid administrative leave. No further details have been released regarding the matter.

The rest of the story coming soon? Must have been fun while it lasted.
What would be nice to read about is what Liberty county is doing to help ICE get rid of all the illegal aliens here.
