Cleveland-area family’s home destroyed by fire

The home of Eric and Dawnyale Littlejohn in the Cleveland area was destroyed by fire on Monday, March 10.

A devastating fire destroyed the Eric and Dawnyale Littlejohn family’s home in the Santa Fe Section 5 of the Colony Ridge community, south of Plum Grove, leaving the family homeless and in desperate need of help. The fire broke out Monday afternoon, March 10, causing severe injuries to Eric and leaving Dawnyale and the couple’s two young sons, Isaac and Kingston, with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

The fire started while Dawnyale was cooking dinner. She noticed flames coming from the porch, where the boys’ Power Wheels toy had been plugged in to charge. The toy apparently overheated and caught fire, which quickly spread to the house. Dawnyale screamed for her husband, Eric, as the fire escalated rapidly.

Eric tried to extinguish the fire but became trapped inside as the flames intensified. Explosions erupted from various parts of the home as the fire spread. Eric’s only escape was through the glass door where the fire had started. As he pushed through, the glass exploded in his face, and he had to run through the flames to get out.

Dawnyale managed to grab Isaac and Kingston and get them out of the house safely, but the family lost everything. Tragically, their beloved dog, Max, hid under Dawnyale’s bed during the fire. Overcome by fear and smoke, Max did not survive. Another pet, rescued from the fire, had to be euthanized early Tuesday morning due to the severity of its injuries.

Eric suffered burns on 30 percent of his body and was flown by air ambulance to UTMB Galveston for treatment. His condition remains critical.

Dawnyale and Eric are now facing unimaginable challenges. Eric will be unable to work as he recovers from his injuries, and Dawnyale lost her work laptop in the fire. She manages a staffing agency and desperately needs a laptop to continue working and providing for their family.

Their two young sons, both diagnosed with autism, lost all of their belongings, including toys, clothes, shoes, and even their beds. Kingston, in particular, relied on a tablet to stay calm, which was also lost in the fire. The family is seeking a private place to stay to support their sons’ special needs.

The Littlejohn family is reaching out to the community for support. They need immediate assistance with clothing, toiletries, and essentials for both adults and children.

Miraculously, the only thing they have found that did not burn was a Bible.
