The long-anticipated reopening of the FM 787 bridge over the Trinity River is entering its final phase, with completion expected by late March 2025 or sooner, pending weather conditions.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) confirmed that major construction milestones have been met, bringing relief to local residents and commuters who have faced lengthy detours since the bridge was closed for emergency repairs.
According to TxDOT, crucial bridge inspections were carried out last week and were successfully completed. This week, the contractor, Ragle Construction, Inc., will install crash cushions on the west side of the bridge, which are designed to absorb impact and enhance safety. Additionally, road signage will be placed later this week to prepare for the reopening of the bridge to traffic.
The FM 787 bridge has been undergoing repairs since September 2024 after structural damage necessitated immediate action. Ragle Construction was awarded an $11.8 million contract to handle the emergency reconstruction, with an estimated timeline of four to six months. Despite challenges such as weather delays and material availability, the project has progressed steadily, and the end is now in sight.
The bridge, which spans the Trinity River in Liberty County, serves as a crucial transportation link for residents, businesses, and emergency services. Its closure has forced drivers to take alternative routes, adding significant travel time for those who rely on FM 787 for daily commutes, commerce, and access to surrounding communities.
The bridge reopening will not only restore convenience for local motorists but also strengthen connectivity in the region, benefiting industries that depend on the roadway for the transportation of goods and services. Additionally, emergency responders will regain a more direct route across the Trinity River, reducing response times in critical situations.
TxDOT urges motorists to remain patient as crews complete the final stages of work. Barring any unexpected delays, the bridge will be back in operation by late March.
