A Montgomery County jury has sentenced Sean Michael Gates, 41, for the continuous sexual abuse of a child, following a trial that concluded on June 28, 2025, in the 435st District Court.
Gates was convicted of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child, a first-degree felony that resulted in a 55-year sentence without the possibility of parole. The abuse occurred over a period of four years in 2021, when the child victim was under the age of 14.
According to evidence presented at trial, the child disclosed the abuse to a trusted adult, leading to an investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Children’s Safe Harbor. Testimony included forensic interviews, expert analysis, and corroborating witness accounts.
“This brave child found the courage to speak the truth, and today, her voice was finally heard,” said Prosecutor Tamara Tyler. “Justice was served because she refused to be silenced.”

The jury deliberated for just over an hour before returning a guilty verdict and issuing the maximum sentence: life in prison.
“This case represents the very reason we do what we do,” said District Attorney Brett Ligon. “There is no sentence long enough to undo the damage, but this verdict guarantees the defendant will never hurt another child again.”
The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office thanked law enforcement, forensic experts, and most importantly, the child victim for their strength and perseverance throughout the legal process.

This article contains a number of incorrect statements. Sean Michael Gates is 41 years old, not 36. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison, not life. The abuse occurred over the course of 4 years, not “several months” and the trial took place in the 435th District Court. Not the 221st.
