Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday, July 10, announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of Benjamin Hanil Song, who is wanted in connection with a July 4 attack on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Alvarado, Texas.
During the incident, an Alvarado police officer was shot and wounded. The Texas Department of Public Safety has since added Song to its 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list.
“The targeted attacks against our federal law enforcement officers is a crime and must end,” Abbott said in a statement. “Criminals such as Benjamin Hanil Song will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I encourage Texans with information to call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline or submit an anonymous tip online. Texas is and always will be a law-and-order state.”
On Tuesday, warrants were issued in Johnson County for Song’s arrest on charges of aiding terrorism, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a public servant, and engaging in organized crime. A federal arrest warrant was issued Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas after Song was charged with attempted murder of a federal officer and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Song, 32, is described as an Asian male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair. Authorities said he should be considered armed and dangerous.
In addition to the state reward, the FBI is offering up to $25,000, bringing the total possible reward to $35,000.
To be eligible for a reward, tipsters must submit information using one of the following methods:
- Call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477)
- Submit a tip through the Texas 10 Most Wanted website
- Submit a tip online
Anonymity is guaranteed by law, and tipsters will be provided with a reference number instead of using a name. Authorities urge the public not to attempt to apprehend any fugitive.
