Lufkin man killed in crash north of Moss Hill

A two-vehicle accident Tuesday, Sept. 9, around noon, resulted in the death of a 21-year-old Lufkin man.

According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, supervisor for the Liberty County Office of the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer truck was traveling northbound on SH 146 just south of the Snake River Subdivision north of Moss Hill.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Mateyah Janea Powell, 25, of Beaumont, reportedly pulled into the path of the Lufkin man’s 2018 Ford Fusion, which was heading southbound.

Willoughby said the tractor-trailer was attempting to pull into the driveway of a gravel pit when the crash happened.

The Lufkin man died at the crash scene. Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Cody Parrish conducted an inquest and ordered an autopsy in Beaumont.

While the Lufkin man’s next of kin has been notified, his name is being withheld until Wednesday.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Natalie Aguirre, assisted by Willoughby and other troopers.

SH 146 was closed for several hours during the investigation.

The case will be referred to a Liberty County grand jury for charges against the tractor-trailer driver.
