Alvin Samuel Simonson Jr., 73, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family in Liberty, Texas, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026. Al, as he was affectionately known, was an absolute treasure in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him, he was devoted, loving and an affectionate husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He had a litany of nicknames—some foreseen, others, perhaps not—Al, Alsey, Big Al, Poppy, Pops, PawPaw, to name a few, but his absolute favorite, Dad.
Al was born on Feb. 13, 1952, to Alvin Samuel Simonson Sr. and Rose Catherine McKenna Simonson, in Belleville, Illinois. He spent the next 30 years in Metairie, Louisiana, where he graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School and later Nicholls State University or more appropriately “Harvard on the Bayou,” earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After graduation, Al went to work with his father, Al Sr., at Quikrete, where he was soon entrusted with the challenge of establishing the company’s presence in Liberty, Texas. The success of that venture marked the beginning of a lifelong career, and his leadership and expertise later led him to support and strengthen operations at several other Quikrete plants.
The depth and breadth of Al’s life experiences are too numerous to name, but he especially loved everything LSU, sailing and sailboat racing with his father and brothers, golf with his sons, and the music of Jimmy Buffett. Al was a City of Liberty Council Member from May 2007 – May 2011 and a dedicated member of the Lions Club. On September 30, 2025, Al was baptized by Freedom Church.
He was preceded in death by parents, Alvin Samuel Simonson Sr. and Rose Catherine McKenna Simonson; and grandson, Bailey Ramon Cadoree.
Al is survived and missed by his loving wife Libby of 24 years; and his children, Michael Lyn Robins, Alvin Michael Simonson, Erin Cathryn Simonson, Shannon Simonson Francis (Travis), Sarah Elizabeth Simonson, John Samuel Simonson (Amanda), and Corey Gerald Robins (Lizzie). He is forever cherished and remembered by his grandchildren, Tyler Ray Robins (Sarah), Emma Renee Simonson, Hannah Grace Simonson, Wesley Rose Simonson, Rose Catherine Francis, Lee Samuel Francis, Cecilia (Ousie) Louise Simonson; and great grandchildren, Cameron Gerald Robins and Grayson Lane Robins. Al is also survived by his siblings and their families, including Anne Lynn Hopkins, Carol Rose Lavin (John), Bradley Thomas Simonson (Debbie) and Eric James Simonson (Judy).
Visitation will be held at Allison’s Funeral Home, 1101 N. Travis Street, Liberty, Texas on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, from 5 —7 pm. Funeral services will be officiated by Jason Cowart, Lead Pastor, and Tony Alberti, Executive Pastor, at Freedom Church, 422 Highway 90, Liberty, Texas on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, at 11 a.m., immediately followed by a reception at Calhoun’s on the Green, 100 Country Club Road, Liberty, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either The Mustard Seed in Brandon, Mississippi or to Freedom Church in Liberty, Texas.
