Today, March 3, is Election Day, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Due to the number of candidates in several local races, some contests could result in runoff elections in June. To avoid a runoff, a candidate must receive 50 percent of the vote, plus one vote, in today’s primary.

Races on the Liberty County ballot that could possibly — but not assuredly — result in a runoff include U.S. Congressional District 9, Pct. 2 Commissioner, Pct. 4 Commissioner, Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace, Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace and the 75th State District Judge.

There are four candidates for 75th State District Court Judge, listed in ballot order: James “JD” Chandler, Michelle Merendino, Zack M. Zbranek and David “Glenn” Williams.

Five candidates initially filed for Pct. 2 Commissioner — Jacob Mullins, Layne Crouch, Wade Brown, Richard Himburg and Greg Arthur — though Crouch bowed out of the race.

Three candidates are seeking the Pct. 4 Commissioner position: John Headrick, Gerald Kolarik and Brant Elliott.

Three candidates are on the ballot for Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace: Briana Dryer, Robert Adams and Jimmy Belt.

Four candidates are running for Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace: Joe Williams, J.W. Gardiner, Bryant Kutra and Joe McAnally.
