Dayton High School bands sweep UIL with top ratings

Dayton ISD Fine Arts program continues to build on a strong year of achievement, with all three Dayton High School bands earning top honors at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluation held at Nederland High School.

The DHS Junior Varsity Band “B,” directed by Abigail Fenton, the DHS Junior Varsity Band “A,” directed by Danny Williams, and the DHS Varsity Band, under the direction of Kevin Heckaman, each received unanimous Superior “First Division” ratings from judges.

This accomplishment follows recent success by the Woodrow Wilson Junior High band and marks a significant milestone for the district. With both junior high and high school bands earning the highest possible ratings, the achievement represents only the third time in district history that the entire band program has earned a full Sweepstakes.

District leaders say the recognition reflects the strength of the program from the ground up, highlighting consistent excellence in instruction and student performance across all levels.

Additional recognition was given to Perfecto Aleman for his work supporting percussionists across all seven bands this year. Betty Woods and Byron Malone were also acknowledged for their continued dedication to student success.
