About 25 volunteers spent their Friday morning, April 10, helping clean up the Trinity River riverbank near the U.S. 90 bridge in Liberty, collecting an estimated two tons of debris in just a few hours.

The cleanup effort was hosted by the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management in partnership with Entergy Texas, Liberty County ISD, Texas AgriLife and 4-H, with representatives from the American Red Cross also on hand. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Parks and Wildlife provided airboats to ensure the safety of volunteers, while Liberty Fire Department was also on standby in the event of an emergency.

Volunteers worked along the riverbank gathering a wide range of discarded items, helping restore the natural beauty of the area while preventing debris from flowing downstream.

According to A.J. Johnson, director of the Liberty County OEM, many of those who participated were from Entergy Texas, whose team made up a large portion of the volunteer group. Their efforts, along with others in attendance, resulted in a significant amount of trash being removed from the waterway.

Johnson said the cleanup not only improved the appearance of the riverbank but also helped protect wildlife and reduce environmental impact in the area.
