Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a registered sex offender and recovered a stolen firearm during a traffic stop Saturday, May 23.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies assigned to the Memorial Day DWI Task Force conducted a traffic stop at approximately 8:25 p.m. in the 8200 block of FM 1488 in Magnolia.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Jose Dennis Garcia-Murillo.
During the investigation, deputies working alongside Homeland Security Investigations Houston determined Garcia-Murillo had an outstanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement administrative warrant. Investigators also learned Garcia-Murillo is a convicted sex offender who had previously been deported from the United States and later re-entered the country illegally.
After Garcia-Murillo was taken into custody, deputies discovered a firearm inside the vehicle that had been reported stolen during an aggravated robbery in Houston.
Authorities said Garcia-Murillo was working as a contract Amazon delivery driver and had packages in the vehicle at the time of his arrest.
He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and booked into the Montgomery County Jail.
Because Garcia-Murillo reported residing in Harris County, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Compliance Unit notified the Harris County Sheriff’s Office after determining he had not registered as a sex offender there as required by law.
Additional charges may be filed by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
