DPS shares safety tips as Texas prepares for World Cup crowds

As Texas prepares to welcome millions of visitors from around the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, state officials are urging residents to remain alert and take extra precautions amid increased traffic, large crowds and heightened security concerns expected throughout the tournament.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said months of planning are underway with state, local and federal agencies to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the international event. In Texas, World Cup matches will be played in Houston and Dallas.

With increased travel, large crowds and major events expected throughout the tournament, safety is a shared responsibility. Pay attention to your surroundings, plan and follow basic safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

“Texas is proud to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and for months, DPS and our state, local and federal partners have been planning and practicing to make sure we can provide a safe environment for residents and visitors,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “Whether you are attending a match, visiting fan events or traveling throughout the state, we encourage everyone to stay alert and follow safety guidance.”

DPS encouraged motorists to avoid impaired driving, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, buckle up and drive defensively. Officials also reminded drivers to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the roadside with emergency lights activated.

With heavy traffic expected around venues and event-related activities, DPS urged travelers to monitor weather and road conditions and allow extra time for travel.

The agency also warned the public to be aware of signs of human trafficking, noting that large-scale events can create opportunities for traffickers to target vulnerable individuals.

Potential indicators of trafficking include individuals who appear to be under someone else’s control, have little awareness of their surroundings, show signs of untreated illness or injury, or appear unable to speak for themselves.

Officials urged anyone who suspects human trafficking to call 911 immediately and provide as much information as possible. Reports can also be submitted through the iWatchTexas program, the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888, or by texting “BeFree” to 233733.

DPS also encouraged Texans to download the free iWatchTexas mobile app, which allows users to report suspicious activity that may be related to criminal, terrorist or other public safety threats.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted in 16 cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico. U.S. host cities include Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.
